WHAT TO SEE

The relatively small area of the National Park has an abundance of geomorphological shapes and sights, as well as diverse flora and fauna, attractive landscapes and untouched nature. The National Park covers an area of 95 km2, with Vaganski Vrh (Peak) (1757 m) and Sveto Brdo(Holy Hill) (1753 m) as the highest peaks.

The most impressive parts of Southern Velebit are definitely the gorges of Velika and Mala Paklenica. Velika Paklenica is 14 km long and 500-800 m wide. The narrowest part of the gorge is only 50 m wide. Vertical cliffs rise up on both sides to a height of over 700 m. Mala Paklenica is 12 km long and 400-500 m wide. Its narrowest part is only 10 wide, while the surrounding cliffs rise up to 650 m in the air. The passage between Velika and Mala Paklenica is made somewhat inaccessible by the rocky limestone formations.

The geological characteristics of the National Park are evident in the limestone area of Bojinac, Vidakov Kuk and on the plateau between the two gorges. Diverse karst relief forms, such as cracks, groves, pits, faults and caves have developed due to intensive water activity and extreme temperature variation during the four seasons. (Source: Paklenica National Park)
