Lake Vrana Nature Park Total score -
Lake Vrana (Vransko jezero) Nature Park stretches along the coast between Pirovac and Pakoštane, just 1km from the sea.
WHAT TO SEE
Lake Vrana (Vransko Jezero) is the biggest lake in Croatia. It is, with the lower flow of the river Neretva, the only larger swamp area in the Mediterranean part of Croatia. It is one of the rare intact natural habitats of water birds. Since sea water flows into the lake, the salinity of the lake is somewhat higher and both sea and freshwater fish live in the lake.
The predominant characteristic of the park is its Ornithological Reserve; it received this status in 1983 for its well preserved reed-patch area in the north-western part of the lake, its biodiversity and extraordinary scientific and ecological value. The reserve has been included in the list of Important Bird Areas in Europe.
The park stretches across 57 km2, 30.02 km2 of which is the lake itself. The lake stretches in a northwest – southeast direction, parallel to the coast, from which it is, in some places, less than a kilometre away. The lake is unique for its position and characteristics, not only in Croatia but also in the broader area of Europe. Within the park is a lookout point Kamenjak, from which you have a captivating view of Lake Vrana and its surroundings.
The climate of the area is typically Mediterranean. Springs, pine woods and the Crkvine Campground offer shelter and refreshment at every opportunity.
ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE TO VISITORS
The park offers peace and relaxation to bird watchers, as well as sports fishers, who can fish on the lake and its banks throughout the year. Bikers and hikers will have an amazing experience on the 40 km long cycle route around the lake. The route goes along lookout points and areas that take in the magnificent colours and aromas of aromatic wild plants, especially healing sage. Part of the route offers you shelter in the freshness of the pine wood. In ancient times called “Vedro blato” ("Clear mud"), Lake Vrana has numerous cultural and historical monuments, some of which date back to 2000 B.C. Lake Vrana Nature Park still conceals many secrets and is a constant source of scientific discoveries which the park, with the help of experts from various fields of research, endeavours to explore and share with the world. There are few areas in the world where you can, in such a short time, explore three very different landscapes: the sea shore and the rich archipelago beyond it, the Mediterranean swamp with its unique landscape and ecosystem and, just behind the hill, the rural idyll of the flat district villages.
